Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are these games you make?

We make what are called MMORPGs. (Or just MMOs or MUDs. Different words for the same thing.) That stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. Whew! What a mouthful, eh?

Our games are essentially virtual worlds where thousands of people live alternate lives and interact in real-time. When you begin, you'll create a character, pick its name and sex, pick a race (like human, dwarf, imp, etc), and then you'll be given the option to be led through a short introduction to the game. The introduction can only scratch the surface for you though. These worlds have far, far more in them than you can see in a year. As you learn more about the world you're in and progress, options will open up like traveling to other planes, running for political office, becoming a merchant, joining a religion, going to war, and far more.

Now here's what will really blow your mind: There are almost no graphics. Almost everything is done using text. Hard to imagine, isn't it? The only way to really 'get' it is to start playing. It'll seem unfamiliar at first, but soon you'll find that your mind creates images a whole lot better than a 3d game developer can, and you may start looking at 3d worlds as a bit cartoony and awkward. Don't believe us? Click on the 'Testimonials' link on the left, and hear what some of our extremely devoted players have to say.

2. How much do they cost to play?

Nothing! Our games are completely free to play, and we do not run third-party ads on any of our sites. You do, however, have the opportunity to purchase 'credits' which will allow you to speed your progress towards certain goals in game. They are entirely optional though, and anything you can attain with them you can attain without them by just playing the game longer. If you would like to learn more about credits, please read our Payment FAQ.

We're confident that you're going to like our games enough to want to support us, and that's how we've not just survived, but thrived for the last 8 years. Our players are fanatically loyal, and we do our best to ensure we give them a playing experience that warrants that kind of loyalty.

3. Why should I play your games instead of World of Warcraft or Everquest II?

If you've played any of the big MMOs, you know that they are about one thing and one thing only, fundamentally: killing monsters. That's pretty much it. Yes, many of them add on things like realm vs. realm combat and crafting, or a limited PvP endgame, but there just isn't much of a world there.

Our games are different. They have player-run city-states that can do everything (depending on the game) from develop subdivisions for player housing to go to war with each other to set property tax rates on player shops within the city's territory. You'll find all sorts of systems that you simply aren't going to find in a game like Warcraft - player-run libraries, the ability to become a bookie, tons of GM-run roleplaying events, active and meaningful religions with GM-run Gods. Sure, our games have monster bashing, but it's just one of many, many things to do.

In short, what you'll find is that you're trading eye-candy for depth and breadth of content when you switch from a World of Warcraft to a world of the Iron Realms.

4.There's not much info on this site. Where can I find more?

The best place to start is at the beautiful websites for each game. They can be found here:

Achaea, Dreams of Divine Lands http://www.achaea.com
Aetolia, the Midnight Age http://www.aetolia.com
Imperian: The Sundered Heavens http://www.imperian.com
Lusternia, Age of Ascension http://www.lusternia.com
Midkemia Online http://www.midkemiaonline.com

5. I've played text MMOs/MUDs before. What are so special about yours?

A number of things. First, at least 98% of text MUDs are run by people as hobbies. Some of them do a remarkably good job at it, but they're in the distinct minority. We, on the other hand, have over 10 professional, full-time developers and a whole cadre of administrators working. We are very dedicated to giving players an unparalleled game experience.

Second, our designs are simply more sophisticated and in-depth than virtually any other MMO. Most hobbyist MUDs only really have one major activity: monster bashing. In the Iron Realms, not only is the combat the best that can be found, but it's just one feature of an incredible range of game systems.

Finally, customer service. We actually offer it! Try even locating a consistent method for receiving customer service in most MUDs.

Remember: There's a reason that the worlds of Iron Realms are all consistently rated in the top 10 MUDs in the world, often reaching #1. We are supremely dedicated to the players in a way that few other MUD operators are.
