A garden

Once, I sowed a garden with you

Seeds were planted with breakneck speed
Their tough skins thrust into fertile soils
In that black dirt they grew quickly
Dark green leaves toasting the sun's spoils
We sat for hours within the shade
There beneath the willows by the water
Our roots far beyond reach of any spade
Until storms rushed in to slaughter

The heavens lashed at the flowers that sprouted
With winds, rains, and hail
I suspected, you deflected, I cursed, you shouted
How could these lilies turn so frail?
I rest now on an empty field
Shards of memories like shattered glass
I hold no mace, I wear no shield
I sit and wait for time to pass

I recall an apology, bitter words hurled or whispered?
One or both of us wagged a tongue
Who knew words could burn and blister?
Blame is a monster who feasts upon love
We share the fault, the reasons are many
And neither wishes to till more soil
Our hands are bloody, muddy
The sweet connection of ours has spoiled

I depart this place a stranger
A whisper on the lips of elders
The sun seems colder, the stars look fainter
I sail for distant lands and seek no shelter
I come to the end of a grand adventure
To serve a self-imposed sentence without pardon
I carry a comfort warmly remembered
Once, I sowed a garden

With you

Penned by my hand on the 6th of Glacian, in the year 657 AF.
