Vagabonds

A stranger showed me a kindness, I didn't know what to say,
That a fellow vagabond would take the time from their day.
Peculiar, strange, how such a dark shade of pink
Could stop me in my tracks, could make me take time and think.

What have I done in all of this time, with the stories I've told?
I've spent so much time regaling the young, while keeping watch of the old.
All I have learned, all I have done, brought to a head
All I have seen, all I have told, the fire that spurred me onwards, now dead.

I search high and low for that which I burned,
The world now seems emptier without the one I spurned.
The kindness of a stranger brought a smile to my face,
But behind that smile, the truth, naught but tears in its place.

I search for what drove me, those wonderful frights,
The moments that kept me up into the night.
Now I lie awake, wondering where they've gone.
It's just not the same now that you have moved on.

I wonder what sparked such a gesture, I do.
A crimson reminder of what I once had with you.
No harm was intended, but insight they brought,
Remembering everything for which I had fought.

So now I do question what purpose I serve,
I seek out the things that strike that one nerve.
Perhaps, in time, something will find me out.
Perhaps, someday, I'll have something more to write about.

In the meantime, the light will shine on my past.
I can only hope these few memories will last.
Perhaps, in time, I'll find a new muse,
But until that time, I live with nothing to lose.

Penned by my hand on the 5th of Ero, in the year 723 AF.
