This is the first question I get asked when people purchase an artifact home, so I'm posting on it, and also put a note in HELP HOUSES under the "HIDE EXIT" section.

You cannot hide the door INTO your house from whatever area you put it up in. You can hide any door/exit WITHIN the house, but the one leading into your house is not considered "in your house." As it is coming from the area your house stands in.
