IRE Asks: What's your Bartle Quotient?

Richard Bartle
The Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology has long been a favourite among MUD and MMORPG fans alike. Based on a paper written by Richard Bartle, but not actually developed by Bartle himself, the test classifies players into categories based on their gaming preference. At the end of the test, your Bartle Quotient is tallied, and you're told how closely you identify with four main MMO player psychologies - Achiever, Explorer, Killer, and Socializer.

Like most tests that attempt to categorize people, it has met criticism over the years. Nick Yee, an expert researcher in virtual environment and social interaction, offers his own perspective in a paper entitled The Daedalus Project: A Model of Player Motivations. However, there's no denying that the Bartle Test has shaped many MMORPGs today, helping game designers refine their product for the end user.

So go on, take the test and tell us your Bartle Quotient in the comments below!

Explorer

as my mentor you always brought me to exciting new places... and mine is explorer too, pretty funny. They should have had the "hermit" for me.

Got the same thing. Pretty confused now considering I haven't explored a new area in ages.

Ditto

Every time I take the test, I score a different thing, based on the mood I'm in, which pretty much reflects how I game. One moment, I might want to PK, another I might want to code or craft. Sometimes I am quite social, and other times I want to just run around alone and deal with merchant stuff and scrolls.

That being said, a new MMO coming out, Wildstar (http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/) bases their player organizations and classes directly on the Bartle types. There are some good interviews with the game's creators that provide some interesting food for thought.

Mine is Meh.

Odd, so is mine.

No surprise here. I'm an explorer EKAS

me too! i wasn't very surprised either tho

Socializer.   Oh well.

I don't know if I should be disappointed or not.

*sigh*

Achiever

I'm a killer!

I always come out explorer! hehe

I'm an Explorer. Not that that should be all that surprising to anyone that knows me.

yay

Explorer

yay

yay!

Explorer.

I'm  an explorer, then a killer, which is amusing.

No friend undiscovered!

It's not what you do, but who you know, how you are known and who loves you. People with high Socializer scores enjoy interacting with other people, forming bonds and finding cooperative solutions to the challenges within the virtual world.

Althought I do not have much time play and socialize, I guess that is what I am: socializer/thoughtful!

I got the same, doesn't surprise me though not sure if it is good... hehe

We'll have killer buddies to take out anyone who says otherwise.

A lot of them. >:|

I based my results on my short term goals, though, rather than long term goals, so I could see that throwing things off a bit.

killer. but it wasnt a great test. all a bit black and white

Agreed

heh, I am a achiever/socializer

socialiser

But I got explorer.

I'm an explorer! Wahoo.

Explorer, with a break down of Socilizer. Yay for being the glue of the world!

Put me in a pigeonhole please!

Socializer. :P

Your gamerDNA is:
Achiever

Description:

Best, first and most are the favorite adjectives of the Achiever. They love comparison not only against others, but also with themselves. They enjoy setting goals, surpassing previous performances and hitting new milestones. They tend to have lots of high scores, badges, trophies and other concrete evidence of their successful endeavors--and they love it if someone notices these. However many enjoy the quiet satisfaction of knowing they simply did better than most.

Explorer... Expected that somehow.

Description:

It's not so much the wandering around and poking about, but that euphoric eureka moment the Explorer strives for. The joys of discovery do not necessarily involve geography, real or virtual. They may derive from the mental road less traveled, the uncovering of esoteric or hidden knowledge and it's creative application. Explorers make great theory crafters. The most infinitesimal bit of newness can deliver the most delicious zing to an Explorer.

explorer

got explorer. Me too!

Your gamerDNA is:
KILLER

Description:

It's the thrill of the kill. Trophies are okay, but that momentary rush attained from besting an opponent is what it's all about.

People with high Killer scores prefer the player-versus-player aspect of any game more than anything offered by the environment. They relish the adrenaline and challenge of pitting themselves against real people. Not all Killers are gankers as some critics claim. While getting the jump on the unprepared for a quick kill is important fun for some Killers, many prefer group PvP and revel in a well executed team maneuver that blows away the opposing side.

Secondary influences

  • Killer Achievers pit themselves against PvE challenges as well--though often it's a means to an end. A KA often enjoys PvP that focuses on their skill as an individual contributor (duels, and so forth) as well as their personal position on competitive ladders and such.
  • Killer Socializers often seek out PvP in a game, but they are looking to socialize with and form alliances and teams with other players who are interested in doing the same. KS tend to seek out guilds or clans that organize formal PvP events, or work on group strategies and tactics.
  • Killer Explorers like to feel immersed in a virtual worlds and see themselves as a great villain or crusader within that world. They seek out challenges against other players, but they are going to find all the areas of that world. Trust an KE to know all the best ambush spots and sniper perches.

Killer as well! (That test took awhile!)

I'm not a killer. I'm a total nub at combat.

We all know you're a bloodthirsty bard. Make their ears bleed, killer.

yep

Sorry, I would have to agree!! It's all that Glom darkness seeping into your soul

And that's part of the criticism! No one stays in one role long enough. It will be interesting to see an MMO that bases classes around it. Will it get old quicker?

No stone unturned!

<.<

That didn't come as a surprise to me.

Explorer (EKSA)

Haven't changed, still love wandering around over much anything else.

"No enemy left standing!"

You should join Mhaldor then!

Not sure if priests are allowed in Mhaldor! :P

achiever

...

hmm

Explorer

.

Killer: 67%, Achiever: 60%, Explorer: 40%, Socializer: 33%

Large groups of morons mean more people to hunt. :D

:D

Rakon, it's a shame you missed TKEP.

when I decide I care enough to check.

Your gamerDNA is:
Killer

Not a bad result I guess. Just because I'm not good at it yet doesn't make it untrue.

Explorer-Killer

explorer

Kill, burn, rape, though not in that order.

I am an explorer

Killer

The Killer motto: "No enemy left standing!" Description:

He looks like someone straight off of Lawrence Welk.

Oh. And Explorer.

but it depends on which character in which game how it all turns out.  different characters give different results.

I found myself answering some questions "in character", which was interesting.

interesting

Still never took this quest :P

Explorer, and bad bad at social :>

I think this can vary depending on my current disposition, but at the moment my result is. Explorer

Socializer: 80%, Explorer: 73%, Achiever: 33%, Killer: 13%

Explorer, apparently. I don't feel that way, though.

Explorer, Achiever, Socializer, Killer.

Though, I agree; it seems as if something is missing there.

Your gamerDNA is:
Socializer

Secondary influences

  • Socializer Killers loyally love and fiercely hate. Groups an SK bonds with in game are often deemed heroic, while the opposition is reviled. SKs appreciate teamwork and cooperation in PvP. They may become vicious predators while enjoying the thrill of hunt within in a pack, but they are not likely to seek out targets by themselves. They enjoy forming groups and alliances that will pit themselves against other players--and they gain the most satisfaction when they defeat organized groups of other players.

an explorer

Never even heard of this test.

RESULTS BREAKDOWN: E.S.A.K.
Explorer: 87%, Socializer: 60%, Achiever: 47%, Killer: 7%

Explorer, and as antisocial as it's possible to get? That's harsh...

The flaw with this test is that it only cares about two things: this, or that! It doesn't test the level of desire for either of those things, and the much harder to score part is it doesn't test the reasoning behind selected choices. I think at least testing the level of desire would produce more accurate results.

I got "Achiever". Doesn't describe me too well.

Secondary influences are:

Achiever Killers (I do like some PvP, but I'm a non-combatant on Lusternia)

Achiever Explorers (does not describe me)

Achiever Socializers (the complete opposite of me)

Yea... Achiever

most of the time the questions asked lead one to a answer in many different ways...one might be a combination of two or more...seems a little to simple to me, but is still rather interesting

Explorer with a hefty dose of socializer. But as Fay pointed out, this is a seriously flawed 'personality' test. A couple of the questions I came up as 'neither' or 'both' or 'wha?' but those weren't options.

Meh

Well it says i'm social. If I take it again it'll be something completly different I bet.

I'm a killer.

Social it appears for me.

I also wonder how many people taking the quiz from IRE know what Bugle Boy was.

The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of company B?

i do! Bugle boy was really popular in the 80-90s clothes fashion industry! They have some nice stuff!

Do you remember Body Glove?

Explorer

I join the ranks of explorer, though. "No stone unturned!"

Killer!

Yes, and I don't mean "Axe-splorer".

socialiser. No supprise.

Explorer

Explorer..meh. It's true and yet...it's just one side. I hunt a lot to raise my level..

Definitely, sometimes I want to select both answers as they come together.

Explorer.

Some of each except the killer

Meh

I would guess myself a little bit of everything

I get different results on different days :o

*Gasp* But that would mean it is bollocks!

--- interesting!

Your gamerDNA is:
EXPLORER

The Explorer motto:
"No stone unturned!"
Secondary influences
Explorer Killers enjoy seeing the world, meeting interesting people...and killing them. EKs love all discovery, but finding an edge over the competition is best. Always seeking new opportunity, an EK likely knows the ten best places to find certain types of opponents, as well as ten different ways for taking them down.
Explorer Achievers have been there, done that and have the t-shirt...in fact they have a plethora of t-shirts, badges, trophies and other rewards. EAs are the completionists of the gamer world. They like to find new places, quests, easter eggs, unlocks, maps etc. and check them off as have, visited or beaten. Like real world travelers, EAs enjoy collecting memorabilia that helps them relive their experiences later.
Explorer Socializers are the glue of the online world. Not only do they like to delve in to find all the cool stuff, but they also enjoy sharing that knowledge with others. Explorer socializers power the wikis, maps, forums and theory craft sites of the gamer world.

I'm likeeeee Dora!

:D

:D

hm.

achiever

is a really fly denim blazer Nick yee has on there.  Kudos.

Consider me not surprised.

Explorer

I got Killer, but I would have gotten Socializer years ago before I really got into combat. I didn't want to sign up to get more info. Some of the numbers were wrong, it's imperfect.

Explorer.

Killer!

Huh....I'm a Socializer....I guess that makes sense, though 99% of the time I'm really out just bashing.

Hahaha, did you answer the questions at random ?

see subject!!!

Hm

Interesting article.

nice article!

i'm an explorer. then it's socializer, acheiver, killer.

Hmm

So much like that test for RL personality type then...

Your gamerDNA is:

EXPLORER

.

.

is there any more of these telling me what i already know?

:D

:D

strange

Achiever explorer. I aspire to become a combatant though, but typically for my type I want to hit Demi first and get a nice experience buffer. If there was no XP loss on death, or a penalty that does not take hours to undo, I'd be pvping it up right now already though. Sparring right now is what I'll stick to.

These questions are pretty easy to game, and sometimes I think both apply, heh.

Socializer.

Explorer. Hm.

Which is wierd, as that's by far the least important to me.

The discrepancy is probably because I don't fit into any of the given descriptions; I'm most similar to the killer explorer, but rather than PvP I prefer to try to use the other aspect of "explorer" (the discovery and creative application of knowledge) to try to war against entire sides and hopefully achieve the sort of goal most Achievers never even dream of.

It's the sort of playstyle which is simply not possible in a purely mechanistic world like most MMORPGs.

if I'm not a socializer, I'll be suprised

Explorer, weird

Hmm, strange.

i prefer getting the items that nobody has

alts make this confusing

Explorer on this character!

My Bartle Quotient says that I'm an EXPLORER....

that's weird cause I rarely leave my grove!

Which kinda surprised me because I didn't think my answers leaned that way.

Some of the questions on this test don't really work very well for the IRE games....the person who wrote it seemed to be thinking of a kind of game context that doesn't really apply.

Achaea is a niche game that the test wasn't designed for, I would agree! Still was fun to try though, I suppose.

Ohh shocking....dint tell me nuffin I dint already know

Explorer. If there was a more specific test I would have ended up with "Administrator/Leader" cause I have yet to have an IRE character who doesn't end up being GM ~_~

I have achieved... nothing yet. Must. Play. More!

Explorer. Not terribly surprising.

This wasn't too surprising seeing as how I love achievements on the XBox as much as I do in completing games to their entirety.

Hmm...The exploration of the mind is definitley enticing...I think it's pretty accurate!

interesting

Indeed.

That definitely describes me well. I'm not a very strong fighter, though I do love the adreneline in the occasional raid.

Explorer-Achiever

Tied three of the types? Explorer, Achiever, Socializer each at 67%.

achiever, not really sure what i have ever achieved though.

Expoloer

Which is mainly true. I play here for the interaction it gives, not for the PvP (although I don't mind raids) or experience rankings.

I like making even extremely minor, everyday interactions as special as they can be. I'm not that good at it yet, but I'm getting there! Heh.

Breakdown:

-65% reward-driven
+50% thoughtful
+65% exploratory
-50% physical
+100% social
-65% competitive

Makes a lot of sense indeed.

Explorer? But I'm confused, I don't usually explore...

I dislike immensely quizes that attempt to pidgenhole everyone.  Very rarely I take them and after reading the comments above didn't even bother to look at this one, don't have too much time to waste on some nonsense.

No friend undiscovered! Yay

Secondary: Killers, Explorers, Achievers

huh

Killer

Figured, however, I am certain I am an achiever as well.

SKEA? Weird.

There are only four categories. The truth is, there are more than four gamer values. I know, all tests show the bias of the test creator. Fun facts: anyone with a high IQ knows IQ testing is bull, while psychological studies on testing show that most people who find a test invalid are those who score poorly on it. Only idiots rely on testing. Unfortunately, most people are idiots.

I'm an explorer.

Mudsexer? Huh?

Said I'm a socializer, which I'll accept. I get along better with acheivers and killers than I do with other socializers, though.

I am Bill Nighy, and I'm an explorer.

K, E, S.  In this order.  I perfer little of everything, but i personally recieved Socializer from the test >.>  Achievements don't drive my interest.

Followed by Killer Achiever Explore.  That's fun.

Supposedly I'm an explorer. I don't know how, I don't do that much exploring.

I'm an explorer? Since when? The only places I've explored are Ulangi and Mysia.

I got Killer but....

RESULTS BREAKDOWN: K.A.E.S.
Killer: 53%, Achiever: 53%, Explorer: 53%, Socializer: 40%

I'm just as much an Achiever and Explorer as I am a Killer. I wonder if all that cancels eachother out and makes me an unsocial non-entity?

At the very least, I'm well-rounded.

Achievement whore reporting in. Exploration is part of that for me. I'm pretty big on combat in other games, but here it's still a bit on the back burner until I get more credits. Socializing is important too, I've stayed longer with other online games than I'd normally have purely because I like the people in it. I'm well rounded on the last three, with a peak in achieving :D

Where is that category? Didn't take the test, obviously.

Explorer!

Explorer. RESULTS BREAKDOWN: E.A.S.K. No surprises there.

Hrm

I'm taking the quiz, and it is pretty slow. I do find that the questions are a bit black and white, and do not apply well, in all parts, to IRE games, well, at least to Achaea.

Sexy
