Virtual Pet Options in the Top MUDs

A Diabolist from Imperian

In Iron Realm's top MUDs, classes make use of the ability to summon loyal entities of different varieties--perhaps a falcon or a snake. These can be invaluable not only for combat, but also inspiration for roleplay. There are some who look down on 'Pet RP',  which often just ends up being owner speaking through and to their animal. This can seem rather one-sided as it is essentially means that this person is just talking to himself! This does not have to be the extent of the interaction, however.

Many classes can and do make use of all kinds of mounts. Everything from stubborn mules to tigers, to wyverns and chimeras. With a few lessons the creatures one can vault upon and survey the realm from is an innumerable list. Some have exotic defining features, some can fly, and many will need to be fed. They can be named and attributed with a personality all their own. They become our stalwart partners through thick or thin, and sometimes their deficiencies can make them the laughing stock of our combat parties (the author will refrain from mentioning a certain Achaean roc here). For a few or many gold sovereigns we can enrich our experience a little further with one of these mounts.

Another cheaper option in many IRE games is the mini pet. Bought with a few thousand gold, these are the small animals like cats, dogs, lizards and birds. They tend to have a favourite food that will illicit a reaction unique to their type and some of them can even be trained. These start out at the ‘baby’ stage and grow over a period of years. Eventually, if they are not slaughtered by some foul evil-doer, they reach a ripe old age and die. The opportunities for roleplay are often small ones. Perhaps a scolding for allowing your text dog to relieve himself upon the House leader’s priceless carpet, or a laugh with a novice about naming your creature, or even a bonding between a few friends when beloved Odif dies and needs to be buried on his favourite island. While these interactions are on a very small scale, they can be recounted later, laughed at, or remembered fondly over a pint.

Lastly,  for the heavy hitters and lucky folk, there are the PET pets, the ones that start at a small fortune and go up and up in price from there. These have a great many more possibilities than the mini pets or even the mounts. For a price, you can make them flying, sentient, mountable or even invincible. The sky and your imagination are the limits. They can react to others if you wish, speak, send tells, and even fight beside you. You can create something that fits your character, a creature that has meaning and a story to go with him. Since they can be made invincible, they need not die and, even if they do, they will return to you in time so that your investment is never lost. These creatures will be your companions through everything, whether you like it or not.

Pets and mounts are a small aside for most of us, but even small opportunities can define our characters, create possibilities and spark ideas for others. They are yet another aspect that can further enrich our text lives.

Wowza? I get the feeling this is broken...

D: MKO has some cool pets, but I don't think many have the option for that much customization, and it is sad. (Either that or I'm just clueless.)

Ive got several pets ive bought at various Banapis fairs including a baby Kraken and crocodile, I havent tried to upgrade em (if its even possible) 'cos I aint sure what'l happen to em...Wouldnt mind the kraken growing up though, id love to drop it in the central square of Sargoth and watch the fun

MKO's banapis pets are similar to the 'mini' pets the individual is speaking about. The difference is that they remain the same age as what they were when you purchased them and will not die unless killed by another player.

To my knowledge, we are unable to custom these pets, not even to change their description slightly. The reason being:

What the author of this article calls PET pets, those pets that you are only able to gain through auction in MKO, can cost any amount of credits depending upon player interest. The auctions are specifically a business tool meant to encourage individuals to purchase credits from the company.

Were MKO to allow custom work to be done on the banapis pets they would lose the potential revenue from the auctions as well as lose a level of control over the number of unique pet items in the game. Past that, there would be far more work for Ishap, as he is the only one of the admins technically permitted to make changes that in any way touch on the credits the players hold.

good point.

Thanks for explaining.

If the pets are interesting and unique why would anyone want to pay extra to have them changed?

Because they aren't

aren't kraken sea-dwelling creatures though? kind of defeating their purpose if they gallivant around cities and such.

But what if they could fly?

Release the Kraken!

Heh

Or the Graken

exactly...

There seems to be a lot, I don't know what else they can do, though? Can they attack?

The "real" pets, the 500+ credit ones, are very cool, I think because of both their uniqueness - you're paying for something special and original that you alone have designed and have access to, it's a personal thing - and your ability to do cool stuff with them, specifically make them talk and emote, and also put them to use as a mount. I've always wanted one of them.

The lesser options get a bit tiresome after a while. I bought one of those metal birds from the Shop of Wonders when they came out, and it was the coolest thing - for the first few days. Then the shiny new excitement wore of, since it didn't really do anything, and everyone else in the game seemed to be walking around followed by something very similar. I stopped letting it out of my inventory.

Aww

I think that happened a lot. The little birds were very neat but so popular the charm wore off of them fairly quickly.

After a while though (like now), they are kind of rare, soo... :)

I think they're so pretty, especially because there are so many varieties.

Funny, I never see those birds now.

You have to have a magic scrying monocle to see them.

Shame that they aren't available. Then again, paying MCs for them makes them hard to buy for some players.

Seconded.

Thirded.

Fourthed.

heh. i don't ever see me having a custom pet with the level of expense attached to it.

Me either.

Price is what prevents everyone from having a custom pet.

same with my wolf.

I doubt i'll have a true "pet" any day soon. They cost to much and I could spend that amount of credits on something more useful like lessons or artes.

A comment a day for a year and a half would get a neat pet, it all adds up! Lusternia's beastmastery and the ability to affect pet appearances through diet are great in the meantime.

That's... long. Heh.

I must agree. But... one a day will work, slowly.

This comment, your comment etc. Motivation to comment on IR pages everyday! :P

very slowly

Good answer

How does that work?

Nevermind! I just figured it out. Of course, the message that popped up immediately was a big clue. XD

Then there's the skill in Lusternia to use it. So better part of two years.

^

I can't imagine spending that many credits on a pet. At least not until after transing all skills and maybe getting a house and/or some arties.

Maybe... get a mount or non-arte/credit pet before then?

Indeed.

Agreed, I also don't see why a house in Achaea is that critical. In Lusternia a manse (house) can really come in handy.

...are you gonna place a chest to store all that extra potash and such?

Houses are pretty easy to get in Lusternia as are a few quest rewards which allow travel. So conceivably not as many arties needed. Cloaking Gem a couple bashing arties, a few more skills, cash for house, then probably pet.

I would feel the same way, except I'm rather fond of the knight classes and a good mount is rather useful.  Then again, the argument could be made that a mount is different from a pet.

I'm pretty set with my falcon and gryphon. I just need a divine who'll allow me to customize my birdie.

I love my treesnake.

I love our snake customization.

I think its cool that each House which is based in a different city has different looking loyals too. (e.g. snakes, falcons)

Yeah.

Yeah, back as an Assassin the pet cobra was always fun, although upgrading to an ourobouros demon was spiffy too. Lots more combat utility with that one!

Hiisssssssssssssssssssss.

Yeah, I loved my cobra as an assassin, but the ouroborous was soooo much more useful!

I really enjoy not having to keep up with a pet. If I had one, I'd constantly forget to stable it before I logged off and it would starve.

You can get the custom ones. No need to feed, ever. :P

Thera pets also don't need feeding, although they do die. In Achaea.

:(

:(

:(

:(

Mine used to starve all the time until I set my client to dismiss it automatically when I quit.

Just reflex to stable it, also in Lusertnia the worst that happens once you level it up is that it loses a level. So no big deal unless you just neve relevel it.

an interesting read and something to think about...

Mm.

Pets.

If ever I find out how to get a bunch of cheap ones, you may find your haven littered with random animals. Like... you may wake up to 19 donkeys spread throughout your rooms.

i think i would enjoy that...

I'd be leery about letting him leave all those animals in there! Me, on the other hand, I like the inanimate rock and elementals, and minions of course. Can't forget the minions, handy little buggers.

yes, yes there are

Moar minnions!

Sounds fun.

Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Gotta love Sable Two.

I sometimes use illusions to give a bit more expressiveness to my $5 promo giraffe.

I was hoping to get a pet from one of the orbs of shifting continents, but no luck.

Ended up with something like... 5 credits.

that's lame

Pets have never interested me.  I have no idea why people spend the mass amount of credits on them that they do.

you probably don't like pets in the first place, i reckon

I like Lusternia's beastmastery as an affordable, somewhat customizable (the mounts get different looks defending on what you feed them, and you can train them with a variety of skills) alternative.

Hmm! I should try getting one for my character there.

I avoided pets there for a long time, but they're actually useful. Can help with hunting (don't do much damage, but can shatter shields, help heal you, reflect you), influencing, pk, and travel. If you think of them as being more of a skillset then a pain they're pretty good. Then the customizable pets are on top of that.

Didn't know the Lusternia pets could do all that. Pretty neat.

Pets seems very expensive, but later in the game I might save credits to get one. They are very useful for RP, and they offer a full array of opportunities. However, I think tey cost way too much.

that

this

pets that have a function.

Yay for falcons!

That's what make lusternia beasts so great.  they're not only rp tools but, are functional and things of utility.  Love them!

whereas achaean mounts are more of the conventional type.

Well lucky you also has an artifact pet, so that's like a pet plus!

..that are also mounts! :)

We have those!

Artefact pets have all kinds of functions, and I keep finding new uses for mine.

always wanted a camel.. They'll never get on shop..

There is no camel mount in Lusternia?

Nope, mostly non-mundane ones. You almost, have to not train it, or train it carefully.

Achaea has some camels, but I think they're mostly artie pets.

and serves me just fine.

Recently I bought a minipet Tarantula from someone. I named her Hexebah and I love it, it is such a cool pet. She eats rats and does creepy things. She cost me alot though.

I can imagine, haha.

I would LOVE a big pet of my own, but for one I'm just not THAT rich, and for two, I don't have any clue of exactly what I want. There are so many things I COULD pick, but I don't know what's best...

sometimes i think i have the same problem

Yeah, Tema's right, she's messed up.

It's tricky to pick just one thing to go with in terms of theme.  I just sort of fell into eagles for Penwize, but it's worked out.

I'd love a custom pet but they're just too expensive for me. Even buying credits IG would take more time than I have.

^

^

Always credits..

I'd love to get my hands on a customised pet, but at 500 credits there's other things that I would consider a higher priority to put my credits towards...

I dont own any pet too

I heard Lusternia has a Pokemon mini-game.

That'd be fun. IRE battle pets.

I choose you!  He uses "Eat!"

a humgii is a perennial Achaea favorite. always will be.

We have that with people you know! It's just that only certain classes can do it effectively.

*pulls out puppet*

I choose you, <persons name>!

*passes hand over three times*

Lusternia does have a 'pokemon' game. However, it doesn't involve mounted pets. Ikon's are gained by doing various quests (including some mini quests you'd might normally do, like empowering your org), quests in villages, etc.

You have character ikons, prop ikons, and scene ikons. Character ikons from your org might be something like a guild novice, guild tutor, org tutor, or npc, etc.

This article is actually helping fund a pet for me! It will be largely useless, and lovely, and I totally don't care.

I love my boar and I get to use a whole skillset from being mounted. Other than that I don't see where a pet is worth it.

RP

.

With the stag antlers? They're super cool!

indeed

Never liked pets in games

I have yet to try out a pet, even a small one. I barely have enough common sense to keep myself alive.

However.  They're stupidly expensive.

Same.

They would die with limbs torn off and blood shooting out of their bodies in small gory fountains. In short, I will not get a pet. Besides, given my finances, I would drive myself into bankruptcy if I tried to get one. And given the choice between a pet and a few hundred credits, I will choose the credits any day.

Can't custom pets not die? I'd think if they were worth that, they can't die!

If you knew Scathain like the rest of Krondor knows him, you'd realize that he'd figure out a way to kill even a custom pet. :P

you're a bad man!

Love my woodlore critters, but wouldn't want a dog following me about..

I'd prefer one dog over half a zoo.

I always thought a whisper spider pet would be cool :D

Doubt it's possiible though, heh heh

Aww yeah would want one of those as well

The pets, especially the customized ones, are one of my favorite parts of the game!

I want to have a custom pet but I don't want anything exotic, just a loyal dog. Nothing better than a dog.

I've got curios, dolls, a timberwolf, a giant eagle, and an enormous dragonfly. I love my dragonfly beast the most, but he's cost me over 3000 credits so far.

That's a shitload..

Credit wise...seen people with a lot more ents at once though =/ Bazaar pets mostly...gets way too spammy

"So far?"

He probably plans to spend even more on it.

dragonfly beast takes the cake!

Custom pets can be great, especially when there is a story behind them that creates a bond to the owner or when the owner takes advantage to really add them into their roleplaying. Even when there is none of that, some are really nicely designed and creative.

I have a few orb pets but I don't see myself ever shelling out 500+ credits for a custom pet, although they are cool.

I always wonder if I could pass off one of those for my custom pet.

I think someone already did a nyan cat on Achaea.

ooooh

what kind of cat is that?

It's a meme cat

I love my loris, I am so glad she found me. ;)

Aww

I need to get a pet. :(

But

I thought you had one already!

1000 new pets.  As do we all.

All of them.

And then a few more for luck.

Custom pets rule, though patchwork monstrosity is cool.

Permanentized Orobouros or Balzadeen type of thing would be pretty cool.

I would love a falcon, but that's not a pet :)

"There are some who look down on 'Pet RP',  which often just ends up being owner speaking through and to their animal. This can seem rather one-sided as it is essentially means that this person is just talking to himself!"

Sure, but to some extent the things that immerse us in the game are always gonna be smoke and mirrors - if it helps immersion or provides enjoyment for someone to roleplay with their somewhat unresponsive pet, who cares? Look down on it? For me, MUDing is an excuse to be able to play pretend as an adult!

it sure helps for those who take a vow of silence

Tsk, that's kinda cheating :P

it's not if the vow of silence is IC :P

Couldn't agree more.

MUDing is most enjoyable when you're IC, and sometimes, being IC includes having pets or animal companions and treating them just like you would a real animal. It shouldn't be like collecting vanity pets in something such as WoW, where you usually only see roleplaying done on servers specifically set up for it and where you don't have any control at all over the vanity pets.

Iron Realms games -are- Roleplaying games in the truest sense, and you are supposed to be IC. You can't do that if you simply choose to ignore your loyals all the time. I hate the idea of someone purchasing a loyal or custom pet simply to have a shiny toy to show off. Especially considering some of the work that goes into creating them and making them work, not to mention the work that the person purchasing puts into the drescription and everything. If you're going to work to get something like that and make it special to you, you should really want to do more than just have it follow you around.

takes a bit of effort, but this is good pet-ownership.

or is it!

Pet RP is awesome.

Is literally paying for MPD.

Current appearance  : an angry songbird

Current dropped     : Floating about angrily, a vibrant red songbird is here.

Current examined    : The majority of this songbird is covered in feathers of a

brilliant and flamboyant red. Two streaks of black feathers cover his eyes,

giving him an appearance of always looking angered. His beak is a bright

yellow, and his breast is a softer, diluted version of the red on the majority

of his feathers. The bird is a tiny creature, barely half a foot in length, but

carries himself with airs of a creature several times larger.

Current enter       : An angry red songbird jets in from the north.

Current leave       : With a perturbed tweet, a red songbird leaves to the

south.

Current death       : Battered and broken, a vibrant red songbird lays here in

a pool of its own blood.

But why is it angry? Something to do with pigs? :)

Green pigs too.

Ugh, birds.

cool! except for the death :(

The idea of dropping down credits on pets is utterly absurd to me. Then again, I've never even been tri-trans.

I used to think the same with that Doctoral Cord thing that lets you skillflex for free... But yes, I'm more focused on transing things instead of putting down credits for a vanity thing.

For me, the decision involved combat and fun. Pets are entertaining in unique ways, and a custom beast is the only way to load up a single one with all the abilities you could ever want to use. Start small and upgrade as time and credits allow.

Seconded.

Thirded.

Seconded.

Seconded

I like your pet, Iasmos!

Thirded.

Play Imperian. Taming ftw.

That sounds cool. The closest Achaea's got is the lasso ability in riding, and that's very temporary.

Which is always good.

We need a larger range of things to lasso.

that would be awesome.  yes please.

Some pets do interesting things... that amount of credits (for the customizable ones) is usually better put towards other things, though.

I love the custom pets that people come up with in Lusternia, especially their little reactions and and the actions that people make them do.

Let me think. Turilira, the radiant Glass Shadhavar, Seothanis the otter, Fata Morgana, Tempus Crysta, an omnihedron, Euterpe the muse.... who else?

Mr Tentacles and Sahmiam's dingo are great too.

Right now I just hvae two kittens from the pet shop in thera. I would love to get a customized pet, but the cost is so outrageous,it'll take me a long while yet to get one. Too many other things to spend my credits on first.

frog, fairy and lava-spider.

I am Bill Nighy, and can't pets be cheaper?

Cheaper pets please. :)

i has no pets

I have a mount, which I am quite pleased with how the coloring turned out. Maybe if I had a lot of credits to spare, I'd get something custom, but for now this is better than I had hoped for.

Imperian doesn't do a lot of things right, but its pet situation is leagues beyond any of you other folks.

I'm saving up for a pet right now, actually. They're really amazing and customizeable. Open up some great RP flavour and are actually really helpful for hunting and PK. I have a collared beast right now, and I already love the benefits it gives me. A custom pet will be endlessly upgradeable though, and that's one thing I can't wait for.

Hope I can save up for one too! :)

I think that, on the whole, Aetolia's golemns were my favourite pet of any sort. Imperian's ouroboros are a close second.
