Virtual Pet Options in the Top MUDs
In Iron Realm's top MUDs, classes make use of the ability to summon loyal entities of different varieties--perhaps a falcon or a snake. These can be invaluable not only for combat, but also inspiration for roleplay. There are some who look down on 'Pet RP', which often just ends up being owner speaking through and to their animal. This can seem rather one-sided as it is essentially means that this person is just talking to himself! This does not have to be the extent of the interaction, however.
Many classes can and do make use of all kinds of mounts. Everything from stubborn mules to tigers, to wyverns and chimeras. With a few lessons the creatures one can vault upon and survey the realm from is an innumerable list. Some have exotic defining features, some can fly, and many will need to be fed. They can be named and attributed with a personality all their own. They become our stalwart partners through thick or thin, and sometimes their deficiencies can make them the laughing stock of our combat parties (the author will refrain from mentioning a certain Achaean roc here). For a few or many gold sovereigns we can enrich our experience a little further with one of these mounts.
Another cheaper option in many IRE games is the mini pet. Bought with a few thousand gold, these are the small animals like cats, dogs, lizards and birds. They tend to have a favourite food that will illicit a reaction unique to their type and some of them can even be trained. These start out at the ‘baby’ stage and grow over a period of years. Eventually, if they are not slaughtered by some foul evil-doer, they reach a ripe old age and die. The opportunities for roleplay are often small ones. Perhaps a scolding for allowing your text dog to relieve himself upon the House leader’s priceless carpet, or a laugh with a novice about naming your creature, or even a bonding between a few friends when beloved Odif dies and needs to be buried on his favourite island. While these interactions are on a very small scale, they can be recounted later, laughed at, or remembered fondly over a pint.
Lastly, for the heavy hitters and lucky folk, there are the PET pets, the ones that start at a small fortune and go up and up in price from there. These have a great many more possibilities than the mini pets or even the mounts. For a price, you can make them flying, sentient, mountable or even invincible. The sky and your imagination are the limits. They can react to others if you wish, speak, send tells, and even fight beside you. You can create something that fits your character, a creature that has meaning and a story to go with him. Since they can be made invincible, they need not die and, even if they do, they will return to you in time so that your investment is never lost. These creatures will be your companions through everything, whether you like it or not.
Pets and mounts are a small aside for most of us, but even small opportunities can define our characters, create possibilities and spark ideas for others. They are yet another aspect that can further enrich our text lives.

Ive got several pets ive bought at various Banapis fairs including a baby Kraken and crocodile, I havent tried to upgrade em (if its even possible) 'cos I aint sure what'l happen to em...Wouldnt mind the kraken growing up though, id love to drop it in the central square of Sargoth and watch the fun
MKO's banapis pets are
MKO's banapis pets are similar to the 'mini' pets the individual is speaking about. The difference is that they remain the same age as what they were when you purchased them and will not die unless killed by another player.
To my knowledge, we are unable to custom these pets, not even to change their description slightly. The reason being:
What the author of this article calls PET pets, those pets that you are only able to gain through auction in MKO, can cost any amount of credits depending upon player interest. The auctions are specifically a business tool meant to encourage individuals to purchase credits from the company.
Were MKO to allow custom work to be done on the banapis pets they would lose the potential revenue from the auctions as well as lose a level of control over the number of unique pet items in the game. Past that, there would be far more work for Ishap, as he is the only one of the admins technically permitted to make changes that in any way touch on the credits the players hold.

The "real" pets, the 500+
The "real" pets, the 500+ credit ones, are very cool, I think because of both their uniqueness - you're paying for something special and original that you alone have designed and have access to, it's a personal thing - and your ability to do cool stuff with them, specifically make them talk and emote, and also put them to use as a mount. I've always wanted one of them.
The lesser options get a bit tiresome after a while. I bought one of those metal birds from the Shop of Wonders when they came out, and it was the coolest thing - for the first few days. Then the shiny new excitement wore of, since it didn't really do anything, and everyone else in the game seemed to be walking around followed by something very similar. I stopped letting it out of my inventory.
Aww
I think that happened a lot. The little birds were very neat but so popular the charm wore off of them fairly quickly.

Why not RP with your pet?
"There are some who look down on 'Pet RP', which often just ends up being owner speaking through and to their animal. This can seem rather one-sided as it is essentially means that this person is just talking to himself!"
Sure, but to some extent the things that immerse us in the game are always gonna be smoke and mirrors - if it helps immersion or provides enjoyment for someone to roleplay with their somewhat unresponsive pet, who cares? Look down on it? For me, MUDing is an excuse to be able to play pretend as an adult!

RE: Why not RP with your pet?
Couldn't agree more.
MUDing is most enjoyable when you're IC, and sometimes, being IC includes having pets or animal companions and treating them just like you would a real animal. It shouldn't be like collecting vanity pets in something such as WoW, where you usually only see roleplaying done on servers specifically set up for it and where you don't have any control at all over the vanity pets.
Iron Realms games -are- Roleplaying games in the truest sense, and you are supposed to be IC. You can't do that if you simply choose to ignore your loyals all the time. I hate the idea of someone purchasing a loyal or custom pet simply to have a shiny toy to show off. Especially considering some of the work that goes into creating them and making them work, not to mention the work that the person purchasing puts into the drescription and everything. If you're going to work to get something like that and make it special to you, you should really want to do more than just have it follow you around.

I used to think the same with that Doctoral Cord thing that lets you skillflex for free... But yes, I'm more focused on transing things instead of putting down credits for a vanity thing.
It's not a vanity thing
For me, the decision involved combat and fun. Pets are entertaining in unique ways, and a custom beast is the only way to load up a single one with all the abilities you could ever want to use. Start small and upgrade as time and credits allow.
