Virtual Pet Options in the Top MUDs

A Diabolist from Imperian

In Iron Realm's top MUDs, classes make use of the ability to summon loyal entities of different varieties--perhaps a falcon or a snake. These can be invaluable not only for combat, but also inspiration for roleplay. There are some who look down on 'Pet RP',  which often just ends up being owner speaking through and to their animal. This can seem rather one-sided as it is essentially means that this person is just talking to himself! This does not have to be the extent of the interaction, however.

Many classes can and do make use of all kinds of mounts. Everything from stubborn mules to tigers, to wyverns and chimeras. With a few lessons the creatures one can vault upon and survey the realm from is an innumerable list. Some have exotic defining features, some can fly, and many will need to be fed. They can be named and attributed with a personality all their own. They become our stalwart partners through thick or thin, and sometimes their deficiencies can make them the laughing stock of our combat parties (the author will refrain from mentioning a certain Achaean roc here). For a few or many gold sovereigns we can enrich our experience a little further with one of these mounts.

Another cheaper option in many IRE games is the mini pet. Bought with a few thousand gold, these are the small animals like cats, dogs, lizards and birds. They tend to have a favourite food that will illicit a reaction unique to their type and some of them can even be trained. These start out at the ‘baby’ stage and grow over a period of years. Eventually, if they are not slaughtered by some foul evil-doer, they reach a ripe old age and die. The opportunities for roleplay are often small ones. Perhaps a scolding for allowing your text dog to relieve himself upon the House leader’s priceless carpet, or a laugh with a novice about naming your creature, or even a bonding between a few friends when beloved Odif dies and needs to be buried on his favourite island. While these interactions are on a very small scale, they can be recounted later, laughed at, or remembered fondly over a pint.

Lastly,  for the heavy hitters and lucky folk, there are the PET pets, the ones that start at a small fortune and go up and up in price from there. These have a great many more possibilities than the mini pets or even the mounts. For a price, you can make them flying, sentient, mountable or even invincible. The sky and your imagination are the limits. They can react to others if you wish, speak, send tells, and even fight beside you. You can create something that fits your character, a creature that has meaning and a story to go with him. Since they can be made invincible, they need not die and, even if they do, they will return to you in time so that your investment is never lost. These creatures will be your companions through everything, whether you like it or not.

Pets and mounts are a small aside for most of us, but even small opportunities can define our characters, create possibilities and spark ideas for others. They are yet another aspect that can further enrich our text lives.

We get pets for Banapis, though I've never bothered to buy one, as I see them more than a mechanical annoyance than anything. I did buy my on and only mount there though (for half the price).

Definitely not. Moar pets!

That's just mean of you. If you have one pet then it gets lonely.

I can't say I ever have had a pet in a mud. I just never saw the point in spending my gold on em

I would like a virtual hamster. As my mount!

I may get a custom pet one day once I have the credits to afford it x_x

I would agree and I never consitered getting one  just for rp.  I did get one though hwen lusternia introduced beastmatery.  it had some tangabal benifitsthen.

I'd like to be mountable.

Never been much for pets, in or out of character, particularly with the price tag attached to immortal pets.  Still, the availability for those who enjoy that sort of thing is good.

eccology in lusternia lets you reanimate corpeses to get an animal companion and one of those animals possable to get is a badger.

Can you reanimate a snake and one of those mushroom people?

Would a horse do? Or kinda plain?

How about a chia-pet

would be ok I guess maybe for a forest-dweller

i didnt think i would like a pet, but after getting one i am finding out i do

so i guess the most recent article gets the most comments?

As an Outrider, I had a badger in my entourage that was grumpy, surly, vicious, unsociable and essentially "living the dream" as my character put it (In her early years, she was very happy-go-lucky though she sometimes wished she could be cranky with people).

Now I no longer have acess to Outrider, I miss him most of all...

Yuppers

I agree

I'd pay for another falcon, or a similar pet with the ability to deliver items.

I miss my falcon, he was a good companion before my class change.

I could never get attached to any pets in IRE games - I just never cared about them outside of being used for combat purposes.

This is the most commented article, I think.

I would love to see HELP PETS expanded to include information for those of us who can't afford custem pets and know nothing about the pets available for sale.

Ya that's the only problem. I see no real benefit in getting a mount over an artefact

an artifact pet in lusternia has advantages over normal beasts. more trains per 600 verses 800 no need to feed, no pay stable fees, you can retain then once a weave if you want. just to mention a fw.

Pets are rather clumsily coded, in my opinion, nor do I have any use for them.

how do you mean clumzaly coded?  I don't know how they are in MKO really but, intrested in why you think this.  Could you elaberate?

Pet's are cool

Arte pets sound cool

artifacts are cool.

They really are, if you give them interesting reactions to things.  They have a surprising number of creative uses even though they're very limited in what they can do.

They really are, if you give them interesting reactions to things.  They have a surprising number of creative uses even though they're very limited in what they can do.

But it takes to much work to get arte's

That depends.  If you save up and spend your time with high gold-generating activities (bashing or questing) then you can accrue credits at a pretty decent rate.  It's not all that fast, but the results are there.

i cant afford a pet. i'll have to settle for a mount instead

... tend to be quite bad. Often the Admin will state "no combat use," but there is always some functionality to them or else people wouldn't spend so much on auction pets. Lusternia might have it the worst with beast balance, but that could also be an advantage over Imperian in a subtle way. That is, they at least don't pretend it has no impact.

My favorite pets would have to be the tracking type. Some ideas are bad.

Pets in Achaea have fairly limited combat use, at least the artie pets, but if you're creative you can come up with a lot of applications of their fairly small set of abilities.

that's unforchunet

I love lusternia pets.  they're really useful. sometime I'll have to try imperian and look at tracking pets just to see how they contrast.

lusternia beasts are good for combat and mob hunting.

Achaea's artefact pets can be pretty useful, really.

I'll have one

I think I'd like Eilona to have a pet eventually, but they're expensive and there are higher priorities for credit use!

Pets are nice, but there are a lot of things you can buy with credits that have a much more significant impact.  Still, if you're going to use them for RP, they can be a pretty big asset.

pets are waaaay to expensive

Pet

I would love an invincible mount...

While they are expensive, I have to say getting a custom beast in Lusternia is one of the best roleplay tools available.  They offer a wide array of ways in which you can interact and command your beast.

I'd say what my ideal pet would be, but then someone would take the idea.

A pet would be fun, if you don't have to feed it, that is.

don't require feeding.  Also come collared and there's an upgrade for invincibility

I love that part about lusternia pets. they don't need feeding where beasts do.  both to stay alive and for taining. pets just feed them reagents and tain away no feeding required.  Love it.

I'm really conflicted as to how I feel about pets in general. Not sure if I really want the expensive ones.

I love the RP that comes with a pet, sure it is just me speaking through my kitsune but when others start talking to him too(as they often do) the possibilities are endless!

Pets open up a lot of really good RP opportunities if you're creative with them.
