Zork I: The Great Underground Adventure


The box cover for Zork IIf you've never played Zork before or are entirely new to text games, chances are you might get stuck. Luckily, we've come up with a comprehensive walkthrough. The idea behind Zork is relatively simple - you must find 19 treasures scattered across the lands and bring them back to your house. One thing to remember while playing Zork is that it is pretty old, and modern text games like the ones at Iron Realms are multiplayer, with hundreds of other players exploring and fighting across the lands.

Zork Commands

Interacting with your character is as simple as typing what you want to do. Don't be elaborate, though! The game only understands short commands, like GET SWORD or OPEN MAILBOX.

Moving around is even easier, you just simply type the direction! Since text games are made up of "rooms", or lots of squares connected to eachother (1 room = 1 square box), typing something like EAST would move 1 "room" to the east.

Zork Walkthrough

Zork I1) The Jeweled Egg

You start the text game outside a house, with a mailbox in front of you. Try to OPEN MAILBOX and then GET LEAFLET. You can READ LEAFLET, but you already knew that! Pretty easy, yeah? Go NORTH twice, then CLIMB TREE. You'll see a jeweled egg in the bird's nest, so TAKE EGG.

2) The Troll (ruh-roh!)

Climb down the tree by just going DOWN. Now go SOUTH and EAST, and you'll be behind the previous house. OPEN WINDOW and then go WEST to get inside the house. Inside the house, you'll want to take the bottle and then go west again. Open the case and take the sword and the lantern. Go east and up. You'll need to TURN LANTERN ON to be able to see. TAKE ROPE, TURN LANTERN OFF and head back down, then west.

See the rug? Try moving it to reveal a hidden trapdoor. Open the trap door, then go down. Here, you want to type SAVE to save your game. TURN LANTERN ON, then go north. To slay the troll, type FIGHT TROLL WITH SWORD. Keep doing it until he is dead. You can type RESTORE to return to your save, if you lose health.

3)The Dead Guy

Go WEST into the maze. This part is confuzzling, so follow this guide exactly. You want to go SOUTH, EAST and up. If you encounter a thief, GIVE EGG TO THIEF, then leave the room and go back. DO NOT MESS WITH THE SKELETON! A ghost will appear and gank you hardcore. TAKE COINS, then go SOUTHWEST, EAST, SOUTH, and SOUTHEAST.

4) Cyclops

Well, this guy is pretty big. Killing him with the sword isn't going to work, we'll have to use our brain. Hm, what is a Cyclops most afraid of? Type SAY "ULYSSES", and the Cyclops will go fleeing out of the run. Go NORTHWEST and DROP COINS, then go back SOUTHEAST.

SAVE your game again, and go up. You'll enter the thief's hidehout, and he'll try to attack you. GIVE EGG TO THIEF and immediately go DOWN and NORTHWEST. Grab your coins, go SOUTHEAST, EAST and EAST again.

OPEN CASE and PUT TREASURE IN CASE. We have one of the nineteen treasures!

5) The Exorcism

Go DOWN, NORTH and EAST to the EAst-West Passage. Now go NORTH, NORTHEAST, EAST, NORTH and TAKE MATCHBOOK. Now go SOUTH twice, to the Deep Canyon. Go DOWN to the Loud Room, and then WEST. In the Round Room, you want to go SOUTHEAST and then EAST. Jumping down will kill you, so lets TIE ROPE TO RAILING and then go DOWN.

In the Torch Room, go south and TAKE BELL. Another south is the Altar. TAKE CANDLES and TAKE BOOK. You can READ BOOK if you like. Go DOWN twice, and then OPEN MATCHBOOK, RING BELL and LIGHT MATCH. Now, LIGHT CANDLES WITH MATCH. If you WAVE CANDLES, the spirits will be greatly weakened! Finish them off with READ BOOK.

Save your game, and POUR WATER ON BELL, then TAKE BELL. You can also PUT CANDLES OUT, to save the wax. You can use this as a backup if your lantern fuel runs out. DROP BOTTLE, you won't need it anymore.

Go SOUTH into the Land of the Living Dead and TAKE SKULL. Now go NORTH, UP, NORTH three times, WEST twice and SOUTH.

6) The Painting

Go SOUTH and EAST, then TAKE PAINTING. You little art thief, you! Go back WEST, NORTH and UP.

7) Killing the Thief

Beating the thief takes some luck, so SAVE here. Let's TAKE COINS, go WEST twice, then NORTH. GIVE COINS TO THIEF, then immediately KILL THIEF WITH SWORD. If you only wound him, GIVE SKULL TO THIEF. Repeat by using the AGAIN command. When he dies, SAVE and go DOWN and EAST twice. TURN LANTERN OFF and DIAGNOSE. To heal, type WAIT. Now go WEST, WEST, UP. Get all of the treasure, head back the same way and PUT ALL TREASURES IN CASE. Go back to the thief's room and TAKE STILETTO. Go back to the treasure case and TAKE CANARY, go east twice, north twice, up and WIND CANARY. Go down and TAKE BAUBLE. Then go S, E, W, W and PUT ALL TREASURE IN CASE!

8) The Treasure Chest

We need to drain the reservoir to get the treasure chest. From the treasure case, go DOWN, NORTH, EAST, NORTH, NORTHEAST and EAST. Now go NORTH twice and PUSH RED BUTTON. Turn lantern off and TAKE WRENCH, TAKE SCREWDRIVER and PUSH YELLOW BUTTON. Now go SOUTH twice. See the glowing bubble? TURN BOLT WITH WRENCH. It won't happen instantly, so WAIT a few turns.

Go WEST, TURN LANTERN ON, then NORTH. DROP ALL BUT LANTERN and go NORTH twice. Take TRIDENT, then go SOUTH TWICE and TAKE TRUNK. Go S, SW, SW, W, S, U and PUT TREASURE IN CASE. Save!

9) The Coal Mines

Let's go EAST, then OPEN SACK and TAKE GARLIC. This will help us against the vampire bat! Go W, D, N, E, N, NE and N. Now TAKE ALL to get all your stuff back from earlier. Your lantern might start to dimmer, so we need to hurry up because lighting a candle in a coal mine = suicide. Go N, U, N, N, W, N, W, N and TAKE FIGURINE, go EAST, PUT SCREWDRIVER IN BASKET. DROP MATCHBOX and DROP CANDLES too, we need to save room.

Go NORTH and DOWN, then TAKE BRACELET, go E, NE, SE, SW, D, D and WEST. Now DROP ALL BUT LANTERN, go EAST and SOUTH. Take coal, then go N, U, U, N, E, S and N. Now go UP and SOUTH. TAKE CANDLES, TAKE MATCHBOOK, LIGHT MATCH then LIGHT CANDLE WITH MATCH. Put the candle and coal in the basket and then LOW BASKET.Now go NORTH, DOWN, EAST, NE, SE, SW, DOWN, WEST. Now DROP ALL and go west. That basket we lowered is right here, so TAKE CANDLES, TAKE COAL and TAKE SCREWDRIVER. Go south!

Now we need to OPEN LID and PUT COAL IN MACHINE, then CLOSE LID and MOVE SWITCH WITH SCREWDRIVER. Rumble rumble! Now OPEN LID and TAKE DIAMOND, then go NORTH and PUT CANDLE, DIAMOND and SCREWDRIVER in the basket, then head east. Now TAKE ALL BUT TIMBER, STILETTO and go back. EAST, UP, UP, NORTH, EAST, SOUTH, NORTH, UP, SOUTH. Raise the basket and TAKE CANDLE and TAKE DIAMOND. Go W, S, E, S, D, U and PUT ALL TREASURE IN CASE. Woot! Save your game.

10) The Eerie Silence

Lets head back down, then go north, two east, north again and then northeast, east. TURN BOLT WITH WRENCH. We've caused the dam to mud up again! We can now go SOUTH and DOWN. Take the bar, then head west. Now go SE, E and DOWN, then TURN LANTERN OFF and DROP LANTERN, CANDLES and get the torch. The torch is a pretty effective light source and doesn't burn out. Go south and east, then OPEN COFFIN and TAKE SCEPTRE. Now go west, south, down, 3x north, 2x west, south and up. PUT ALL TREASURE BUT SCEPTRE IN CASE and save your game.

11) Pot of Gold

Head EAST 4x, DOWN and NORTH. We can't walk on the rainbow yet, so WAVE SCEPTRE and TAKE POT. Now go 2E and 2N, TAKE SWORD and NE. Now DIG IN SAND WITH SHOVEL, keep doing it till you find the scarab. Grab it, then go SW, S, S, W, W, SW, U, U, NW, W, W, W and PUT ALL TREASURE BUT TORCH IN CASE. Oh, by the way, the torch is also a treasure.

12)The Boat Ride

Lets go D, N, E, E, E, U, NW, N, N. Take the pump, then go S, S, E, D and grab the plastic. Now go U, S, D, E, E and DROP ALL BUT PUMP, TORCH. That pile of plastic is actually our boat! Lets INFLATE PLASTIC, and it grows into a boat! Now GET IN BOAT and LAUNCH BOAT. You'll be taken for a ride, so keep typing WAIT until you see a red buoy. TAKE BUOY and LAND EAST. Now OPEN BUOY and TAKE EMERALD, then DROP BUOY. Let's deflate the boat, then TAKE PLASTIC. We can now go SOUTH to get back to the treasure case, so lets head S, W, W, SW, U, U, NW, 4X W and PUT EMERALD IN CASE. Now go DOWN, N, EAST 5X and TAKE ALL BUT LABEL. Save your game!!

13) The Coffin of Ramses

Head 3x W, SE, E, D, S and E. Take the coffin, if you need to drop everything but your torch. Now go south and PRAY. Go W, S, SE, W, and W again, then PUT ALL TREASURE IN CASE.

14) The Secret Tomb

Now that we have all the treasure, a parchment suddenly appears. READ PARCHMENT, then go E, E, SW, NW and SW, then go IN. Thus concludes the end of our guide!
