The Rememberers

It began among friends. The Oracle Orechnai fell into seizures and
convulsions, and his young nephew Marennin contacted those he trusted
for help. Aren and Osifer Ryokus came to their aid, Osifer quickly
cutting the Oracle down from his net where he twitched and lolled. When
he could be woken, he spoke of Five, and mumbled about the stories of a
city being lies. Aren sent for more Atavians and sure enough, when
Asilient Windrayn and Inaris Ta'ros were gathered to total five
Atavians, the origin of their race was revealed.

After the story was finished, however, talk turned to Imps. Orechnai was
confused by the state of his nets and blamed Imps, bringing much
amusement to those gathered as they tried to explain what had happened
during his seizures. Orechnai remained fixated on Imps and would not let
the topic rest, saying that there was a story to be told. When prompted,
Orechnai spoke obediently, but apparently not at his own behest. His
face showed terror and panic, while he began to narrate with utter
lucidity and calm how the Imps came to be created by Lady Khepri.

All present felt their memories surfacing, ancient blood knowledge
speaking to them of the Imp birth. Their tongues moved without control,
their voices as one as they recounted the olden days and deeds, until
the tale had ended and the spell, too, broke, leaving the storytellers
shaken and weary.

Months later, Qeddwyn heard rumors of this phenomenon and asked a
customer of his shop, Arch Duke Kaden Gravz, whether he knew the
details. The vampire quickly asked his own sources and found that Aren
Ryokus had been present, calling for his attendance. Aren arrived and
informed Qeddwyn of what had transpired. Qeddwyn nodded sagely and said
that his suspicions had been confirmed. It was time, he decided, for the
revival of the Kivod'tis.

Qeddwyn explained that the Kivod'tis in the Ankyrean tongue, or Kivodo
Tisa in the Oldest Tongue, means roughly "the Rememberers". With a
representative in every major town, with all the legends and stories and
heroes of every culture vibrant in their mind and on their tongue. They
were storytellers, but in the old days, they were thus also trusted as
historians. Moreover, to claim falsely to be a Rememberer (and thus have
your word taken as truth) was held as a major crime in most civilized
nations. Even among Ankyri, it would seem, the Kivod'tis held some
amount of respect.

Qeddwyn held one of the necklaces of the Rememberers, given him by a
friend as a keepsake many years before the Grand Artifice. Upon the
black leather thong laid a simple silver pendant, in the shape of a
crescent moon. He asked that the pendant be taken to Orechnai. He wished
for Orechnai to revive the old ways and lead the Rememberers, gathering
to him other storytellers and folk that spoke of truth and memory. Aren
and Kaden agreed, journeying to the Oracle's home.

Upon seeing ithe crescent moon, however, the Oracle became hysterical.
He cried of dreams of death and screams and blood, and had to be taken
to his room to rest. He wouldn't listen to anything about the
Rememberers or the Kivod'tis, and instead fell into a restless sleep.
When the Luminary and vampire returned to Qeddwyn to return the pendant,
they found Qeddwyn arguing with a young lizardfolk woman named Silse.
The girl claimed she deserved a chance to be the leader of the
kivod'tis, and that she knew a tale worth consideration for the title.
At length, the Ankyrean agreed to hear her out, and Silse told the story
of how the Xorani race was created.

Qeddwyn was disappointed by Orechnai's reaction to the pendant, but
having deemed Silse's story indeed ancient and true, instead gave the
Rememberers over to the care of Silse. Qeddwyn warned that there were
likely many pendants like hers throughout the continent, passed from
parents to children and teachers to students, always accompanied by
stories that need to be remembered or forever lost. The young Magus was
overjoyed and returned to her guildhall to ponder her responsibilities,
considering where best to look for ancient lore and its keepers.

Penned by my hand on the 25th of Haernos, in the year 174 MA.
