Subj: Exploration Ranking Update

I've investigated the bug with resetting exploration rankings, and I have some good news and some bad news. First, the bad news:

I have discovered what caused it, and I have corrected the problem to make sure it never happens again. What happened is that I stumbled across some old, harmless code that we have never used before. It allows gods to log their daily activity to keep track of what they are doing, and was written in the pre-Ishap era of Midkemia. It looked harmless enough, and I was testing it out to see if it might be useful for our team (Note: This is a bad idea on the production server). What I did not realize is that it was written poorly and did not respect the tree structure of our database file system in which it stored these logs. When I cleared the activity log, rather than clearing my log, it wiped out the entire directory in which these logs reside. It also happens to be the directory where exploration information is stored, along with some other files that are not relevant to players.

It took a few days to link the two together since exploration data is not updated until a player logs in and starts wandering around. So next I went to grab a backup copy of the data to try to restore those specific exploration files that had been lost. It turns out that the backups of this particular data had not been stored properly, also since the pre-Ishap era. It is pretty much the perform storm of bad things to happen.

What it ultimately means it that the exploration data is non-recoverable. Players will simply have to re-explore the world to restore their exploration ranking (though as a minor upshot you will gain that exploration experience over again as well).

So, what happens next? That is a good question, and also where I have some good news.

First, I have to apologize that this occurred. It won't happen again since the offending code has been corrected, and we are always very, very careful when implementing any code that deals with the database file structure itself. Ultimately it is my fault since I ran the command that wiped the data.

Second, I have ensured that the backups are now properly storing this information, so that in the unlikely event that it were to ever happen again, it would be restorable.

Third, I know that it is a big hit for those players who had painstakingly explored every hidden nook and cranny across Midkemia. Because of that, I have implemented a new, permanent reward for players who achieve the rank of Midkemian Riftwalker. The reward is very good, related to exploration, and will come enclosed in a letter from the Fellowship of Explorers congratulating you on your achievement when you next return to your home city (you can go to a post office and retrieve your mail if you don't want to wait). I will leave the reward a mystery for now, since uncovering what is new or hidden is part of the fun of exploration, but I am sure you will enjoy it.

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns about this update (though I will not be able to restore anyone's explorer rank). Again, I really apologize, but I hope you will find the new reward for Riftwalker exciting and worthwhile!
