Subj: Newbies and Names

Just a friendly reminder that players should NEVER, EVER, EVER ask a newbie to change his or her name, or confront a newbie about a namechange.

The Guides and Admins handle all inappropriate names by flagging the character for a rename. The next time the newbie tries to log in after they have already played for a few hours (i.e., they are someone who might stick it out and isn't just testing the waters), they will be prompted to select a new name.

This is unobtrusive, painless, and - most importantly - it avoids an argument with a new player who probably doesn't understand or care about the name rules and will just quit and find some other game to play instead.

I know that choosing a "good" name seems like a no-brainer to a lot of veteran players, but try to remember that the last thing a new player wants to do is sit around picking another name.

As a personal anecdote:

Years ago before I had ever heard of Iron Realms, I stumbled across a game called Achaea (that is one of our sister games, if you are not familiar!). I created a character in this game, played to level 10, and was promptly told to change my name or get banned. I quit, and never tried it out again.

My character's name was probably pretty unoriginal by some standards (it was a name from a fantasy series), but as a newbie I just wanted to play the game, and left when I was unable to do that. Since then, I've come a long way - and that game lost a player who would have otherwise invested a lot of time and energy into it! So keep in mind that even if you think a newbie's name is silly, it's highly subjective, and that person might one day become a very involved and devoted player if given the chance.

To summarize again: Don't ask newbies to change their names, even if you think it is silly! Let the Guides and Admins handle it!
