Starmourn Star Fighters.

IRE’s newest title, Starmourn released in BETA in 2018 as a groundbreaking entry into the company’s game worlds. Lost Gods no longer dictate the flow of the Starmourn Sector; rather diverse alien populations, politics, and forces act with and against each other to literally alter time and space. Spacers of all backgrounds are set in conflict with the Ishvana, a cruel and seemingly all-powerful hivemind that seeks to devour the stars…

What is Starmourn?

Starmourn is a text-based multiplayer RPG in the MUD tradition. Where Achaea, Aetolia, Lusternia, and Imperian all take place in magic-based worlds, Starmourn is set in a science fiction universe with its own original history, alien civilizations, faster-than-light travel, and technology-based class mechanics.

Like all Iron Realms games, Starmourn has no graphics. The universe is presented through descriptive prose and players interact through text commands. The genre’s usual advantages apply here: a persistent world that accumulates history, player-run organizations with real governance responsibilities, deep combat systems that reward deliberate study, and a community where identity and reputation matter over time.

For players who want the depth of the Iron Realms engine in a setting that is not high fantasy, Starmourn is the only option in the catalogue. If you are new to text RPGs, the MUD games overview covers how the genre works.

An all-original sci-fi universe

The Starmourn sector is a fully original setting. This is not a licensed sci-fi universe or a reskin of a familiar property. Iron Realms built the world from the ground up: the history of the galaxy, the relationships between civilizations, the wars and treaties that shaped the current era, and the internal cultures of the alien species all came from the same design process that created the lore of Achaea and Aetolia.

The Starmourn Sector of today crosses many planets and space sectors in a galaxy where Earth is long-lost and only the most resilient People thrive. Their stories of bloodshed and abuse, of love found and lost, of treasures unearthed and challenges conquered live and breathe among the Sector’s inhabitants, waiting to be discovered.

Three major factions organize the political landscape: the Song Dominion, Scatterhome, and the Celestine Ascendancy. Each controls territory in the sector and has its own ideological identity. Player characters choose a Faction alignment which connects them to that Faction’s politics, conflicts, and community the same way city-state alignment works in the fantasy Iron Realms games.

With so many worlds to explore, you’re sure to find one of the hundreds of NPCs in need of assistance that only YOU, the dedicated spacer that you are, can help with! From helping reassemble factory powerlines, to rescuing plushies for a nanite-resurrected child, to retrieving half-digested tools from a dragon with the tummy-rumblies, there is always someone to help in the Starmourn sector.

Five classes built for a sci-fi combat system

Starmourn has five character classes, each with a distinct mechanical approach to combat. The class design reflects the sci-fi setting: abilities come from technology, nanites, void energy, and engineered weaponry rather than magic and swords. The combat system follows the same deep, ability-rich structure as other Iron Realms games, with the same expectation that mastering a class takes real study.

14 playable races across the Starmourn sector

Starmourn has 14 playable races: Amaians, Elgan, Belaul, Jin, Bushraki, Krona, Decheerans, Humans, Nath-el, Nusriza, Ry’nari, Shen, Tukkav, and W’hoorn. Each has a distinct place in the universe’s history and a set of racial traits that affect gameplay. The full range covers body types, biological backgrounds, and cultural origins that reflect the breadth of an interstellar setting where life evolved across multiple worlds.

Race selection in Starmourn connects you to a slice of the world’s lore, tethering your character to community and cultural influences. The Starmourn races are completely unique to this game, and you can learn more about them at starmourn.com/races.

Totally Unique Curing System

Starmourn’s curing systems do not revolve around potions or curative herbs, but rather a high-tech Wetwiring system threaded into the very biology of each spacer.

Wetwiring consists of 5 Subsystems: Muscular, Internal, Sensory, Mind, and Wetwiring. Damaging specific subsystems will lead to ramping afflictions on your target, unless they master the art of mending and repair operations during combat. Mastering combat requires mastery of manipulating these systems and a true understanding of each class’ strengths and weaknesses.

Totally Unique PvE and PvP Experiences

Starmourn’s ground-based combat follows the Iron Realms model: ability-rich combat where each class has a distinct set of offensive conditions to apply and a specific set of win conditions to pursue. For PvE, many class combat abilities and afflictions target mobs and players alike, creating flexibility for your hunts and room to develop your own personal combat style.

Nanoseer

The five classes have genuinely different mechanical approaches, and learning to fight effectively against an unfamiliar class requires understanding their toolkit, not just executing your own. The Fury class in particular serves as a challenge for veteran players, with a difficult combat process that many players agree is uniquely satisfying to master.

The introduction of props changed the game in PvP for Starmourn. Kickstart a brawl in the cantina by flipping over your table, firing off shots at your target while shoulder rolling between cover. Maybe you’ll find yourself wandering the deserts of Ixsei, taking cover behind a boulder as you flood the crystal sands with molten plasma.

Faction conflict creates organized PvP conflict at the organizational level, with territory and influence at stake between the Song Dominion, Scatterhome, and the Celestine Ascendancy.

Starships and Space Exploration

Starships are a core gameplay system in Starmourn. Every player enters the Starmourn Sector with a bootleg Interceptor level starship to pilot through the stars. From there, it’s up to you to decide your path. Will you be a titan of industry, a pirate raiding NPC caravans, a Warden of protection, a bombardier taking out Cosmpiercers and Incursions, or something entirely new?

Starship in dock

Starmourn’s crafting economy extends into starships as well. A character who develops as a shipwright can make components that other players fit to their vessels, including ship mods and furnishing elements to outfit the ship.

Ship-to-ship combat follows the same design philosophy as the ground combat system: deep ability sets, meaningful skill differentials between experienced and inexperienced pilots, and outcomes that reward preparation and knowledge of opponents’ capabilities.

Roleplay focus

Many of the current systems in Starmourn support immersive roleplay, from Performances which allow players to put on free-form concerts and shows, to Museum Research wherein players assemble in a Museum backroom to conduct free-form experiments and investigations to uncover secrets of the Sector.

Even in Legacy Mode, the Admin team remains dedicated to supporting players’ roleplay efforts. Simply submit a formal Request- a direct submission for Admin event support, area building, and more!

Hack the Stars, Spacer

Hacking in the Starmourn sector is not only possible, but encouraged. Hacking is a minigame with a dedicated skill tree that allows players to merge into what spacers call ‘The Grid’. By taking down The Grid’s defenses, you’ll unlock elements of a password to open literal and metaphorical doors in your journey. You might have a door to gain access to an off-limits area, or a bank to embezzle marks from a shady figure, or an info system to learn something new about the world.

Develop your skills enough, and you just might enter the ranks of FRAY, a covert hacking operation that works to [redacted] and earn brilliant rewards for your efforts.

Hardcore Mode: Not for the faint of heart

Ready for some risk? Starmourn is the first IRE title to offer Hardcore Mode, wherein your player character will not clone back to life if they perish. Survive long enough to climb the rankings, and maybe someone will erect a Memorial Plinth to honor you after you inevitably succumb to your mortal coil.

Free to play, no download required

Starmourn is free to create an account and play through the Iron Realms Nexus client with no set up or coding knowledge required. The Iron Realms Nexus mobile app is also available on Android and iOS for mobile play. For players who prefer a dedicated connection, the game is also accessible at starmourn.com on port 3000.

Many worlds of adventure await you in the Starmourn Sector, should you choose to step into it. Check out a full breakdown of systems at starmourn.com/things-to-do/, or dive right in at play.starmourn.com/

Legacy mode: still active in 2026

Starmourn is Iron Realms’ designated legacy game for its sci-fi line. Like Lusternia, it is no longer commercially staffed but a volunteer contributor team continues to work on it.

For players weighing investment: Starmourn’s world and core systems are fully intact and functional. The question of trajectory is real, as it is for all legacy games, but Starmourn entered 2026 with active development effort rather than a frozen codebase.

For any Starmourn players looking to take a more active role in shaping the game world, consider applying to be a volunteer! Storytellers are player volunteers who take on administrative roles: running in-game events, puppeting NPCs, creating new content, and helping shape the ongoing story. Message Argus in-game for more information.

Considering an actively developed Iron Realms game?

Starmourn is unique in the Iron Realms catalogue for its setting. There is no fantasy equivalent that replicates what it offers. For players who specifically want a sci-fi text RPG with the Iron Realms engine, Starmourn is the only option.

For players open to fantasy settings who want the same depth of gameplay in a game with a full paid development operation and a larger player community, Achaea and Aetolia are the active commercial options. The Iron Realms game comparison page covers all five games side by side.

GameRelationship to Starmourn
AchaeaHigh fantasy. Oldest and largest community. Same deep PvP and political structure but in a sword-and-sorcery setting with 21 classes. Actively developed.
AetoliaDark fantasy. 32 classes, vampire characters, gothic horror tone. Closest in energy to sci-fi’s ‘dark universe’ feel but in a fantasy frame. Actively developed.

Learn more at starmourn.com/races/.

Can I pilot a spaceship in Starmourn?

Players pilot increasingly powerful ships that are individually configurable with customizable design elements and room layouts as well as unique weapon loadouts, modules, and operational capabilities.
