Achaea and Aetolia are in active development, have been running for over two decades, and are free to play in your browser without a download.

High Fantasy

Achaea, Dreams of Divine Lands

High fantasy, 20+ classes, six player-run city-states.

The first Iron Realms game and still the largest. Achaea's combat system tracks dozens of afflictions across 100+ abilities per class, and six city-states hold actual elections to determine who controls them. Achaea's combat system has been expanding since 1997, which means the veterans have had almost three decades to figure out ability combinations you haven't seen yet. The players who find their footing tend to stay for years, then decades.

Aetolia, the Midnight Age

Dark fantasy, 30+ classes, a massive player-built economy.

Aetolia runs darker. The factions have been at war for centuries, and the players running the city-states are the ones deciding how that war is fought. Thirty-plus classes with multiclassing, vampire mechanics, and a sprawling library of unique player-designed items circulating in the economy. If you've ever wanted to play a vampire who also holds elected office in an undead city-state, Aetolia is the only game that takes that premise seriously.

These Worlds Have Been Running Since Before Steam Existed.

Iron Realms has been building text-based RPGs since 1997. Players who rolled their first character in the late '90s are still logging in because the worlds never stopped changing around them.

Text enables deeper mechanics. The combat system tracks dozens of simultaneous afflictions, defences, buffs, and debuffs because there’s no frame budget. The economy holds over a hundred thousand unique player-designed items because text storage costs nothing. A political system where someone runs a three-month campaign to win a city council seat by two votes, gets impeached the following week, and somehow claws their way back into office by Friday exists because text doesn’t constrain what players can build with the governance tools.

Graphical MMOs stopped surprising most players years ago. These haven’t.

Creating a character takes less time than reading this paragraph. By tomorrow, the political map will look different, someone's crafting empire will have changed hands, and a fight that's been building for weeks will finally break open. These worlds move every day. The easiest way to find out what that feels like is to log in tonight.

What Game Designers Say About Achaea

Both quotes are from people who built some of the most influential games in the history of the medium.

“I don’t believe there’s another game in existence with this much depth.”
John Romero Legendary game designer, creator of Doom and Quake
“Few virtual worlds with immensely complicated combat systems avoid being completely dominated by them. Achaea is the best-known exception.”
Richard Bartle Co-creator of the first MUD, 1978
